History

Dewdney Players first came into existence in September 1982, although it didn't register itself under the Societies Act until 1987.

Since 1982, the group has gone from strength to strength, providing theatrical entertainment to the community in many forms.

This history is very much a work in progress, so if you're a Dewdney Alumnus with a story to tell, please contact us.

1982

November – A.A. Milne's "The ugly duckling"

  • Dewdney Players being formed. Initial meeting at the station August 26
  • Dewdney Players met at home of Barbara Eisenberg.
  • First play is Carl Mazzuca is in the lead role.

1983

March – Warren Graves' "The hand that cradles the rock" – Directed by Louise Pepper

  • Carl Mazzuca is first president. Lynne de Patie is secretary and Barbara Eisenberg is Treasurer

1984

May – Frank Moher's emotionally charged stage story "The Broken Globe"

November – Winnie the Pooh" staged as a "Readers' Theatre" concept.

  • 2 one act plays
  • Competing against windmill in hr with their one act plays.
  • Dewdney now planning to take their plays to a provincial festival in McMurray.
  • "Starving Artists Bawl" at Masonic Hall to raise money to send Dewdney to Ft. McMurray
  • (Cancelled due to poor response)
  • Dewdney entered a contestant in "Mr. Okotoks" competition – Bob Wilson.
  • Didn't win at Ft. McMurrray.
  • Names mentioned in Western Wheel in 1984:
  • 12 year old James Western. John Benarik, Sandy Singer, Joanne Mercier, and Earl Singer

1985 etc

1994

November – "Cinderella"

  • Cinderella (TaraLee Zimmerman) ad-libs a line with a toy bird – "Fly away birdie" – tosses it into the air expecting it to go over the scenery and land behind. Didn't happen. The bird hit a flat about 7 feet up and lands on the floor. Laughter!!!!
  • Cast of Cinderella appear on Breakfast TV for publicity.
